Professor Thea van der Westhuizen has been an educator since 2002, teaching in both South Africa and internationally. She is passionate about action and experiential learning and entrepreneurship education, and she integrates real-world projects into her curriculum. For example, while lecturing in the United Arab Emirates, she incorporated her Integrated Business Projects class with community events like the Al Gharbia Water Sports Festival and Abu Dhabi Triathlon to give students hands-on business experiencef.
At UKZN, she teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Management and Entrepreneurship, and supervises research at the master’s and doctoral levels. To date, she has successfully supervised 6 PhD and 9 Master’s students to completion, reflecting her dedication to mentorship and student success.
One of Prof. van der Westhuizen’s core teaching philosophies is “learning by doing.” She champions project-based learning, urging students to engage directly with industry and community partners as part of their academic journey.
As Academic Leader of the Management and Entrepreneurship discipline (2021–2023), she drove the adoption of technology and blended learning methodologies to improve teaching quality and student experience.
Prof. van der Westhuizen also ensured that faculty were fully equipped and trained in using new teaching platforms and tools—laying the foundation for more interactive, accessible, and resilient learning environments.
